There are many reasons to come to La Quinta, from the culture to the wildlife, but one of the main tourist attractions in La Quinta and nearby cities are outdoor athletic activities. It is one of the most popular golf spots in the US and there are endless hiking trails and outdoor parks to experience.
If you aren’t the type to sit around Desert Rock Oasis and lounge by the pool but instead want to get out and explore, here are 3 reasons the La Quinta area is an essential vacation destination for people of active lifestyles.
1. Golf Is On Point In La Quinta
Here are just a few of the golf courses and clubs you can experience in La Quinta.
PGA West:
PGA West offers 109 rounds of golf on your choice of 6 courses all tucked into the Santa Rosa Mountains. The grounds themselves are beautiful so you won’t be isolated from the local countryside while you play.
SilverRock Resort:
The SilverRock Resort houses the Palmer Classic Course which is a sprawling 200 acres of expertly designed courses complete with impressive water features and native bunkers. You can say you’ve played on the former home of the Bob Hope Classic after tee off.
La Quinta Mountain Resort
More golf among the mountains is in store at The Mountain Resort. Players love the Pete Dye course designs and elevated tee boxes that show off the view. This La Quinta golf resort is one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 You Can Play.
2. Tennis In Indian Wells
Tennis fans can find some local parks to play at, but will certainly want to check out the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, home of the annual BNP Parisbas Open and located just 5 minutes from Desert Rock Oasis. Reservations to play must be made ahead of time by calling (760) 200-8200. Fees are extremely reasonable at $10 per person during the Summer and $20 per person during the Winter. You can arrange for a lesson with a pro or experience one of the many programs always happening at Indian Wells.
3. Hiking and Wildlife Encounters in La Quinta
Try the 5 mile hike from La Quinta Cove to Lake Cahuilla to soak up the scenery and wildlife in La Quinta. The trail is beginner friendly and features constant stunning views of the area.
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is just 5 miles down the road in Palm Desert. The gardens are full of the diverse plants and animals that thrive in La Quinta. We highly recommend the ‘Desert After Dark,’ feature which spotlights our local nocturnal predators.
Palm Springs Water Park Wet ‘n’ Wild is about a half hour drive away in Palm Springs. It’s worth the haul for a chance to play in this 21 acre water and adventure park on its 18 rides and attractions.
The Lake Cahuilla Recreation Area is off the beaten path in all the right ways. This 170 acre park is nestled in the mountains and visitors can fish, hike and bike around the park.
